    เทรวิส บิคเคิล ทหารผ่านศึกจากสงครามเวียดนามตัดสินใจสมัครทำงานขับแท็กซี่กลางคืนรับส่งผู้โดยสารในนิวยอร์ค เขาได้พบเห็นสภาพสังคมที่ฟ่อนเฟะทั้งนักเลง โสเภณี คนติดยา และเพ้อฝันว่าจะมีใครสักคนกำจัดขยะสังคมเหล่านั้นให้พ้นภัย เขาเจอเบตซี่ ซึ่งทำงานอาสาให้กับผู้สมัครรับเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดี จึงชวนเธอเที่ยวแต่ลงท้ายด้วยการพาเธอเข้าโรงหนังโป๊ ทำให้เบตซี่ไม่พอใจ ค่ำคืนนึงระหว่างขับรถแท็กซี่ไปรอบเมือง เขาได้เจอเด็กหญิงอายุสิบสองปีทำงานเป็นโสเภณีและอยู่กินกับแมงดา ซึ่งนั่นทำให้เทรวิสรู้สึกอเนจอนาถใจ จนต้องลุกขึ้นมาทำบางอย่างเพื่อกวาดล้างสิ่งสกปรกโสมมให้สังคมมีความน่าอยู่มากขึ้น
